On my way to begin this summer’s adventure, I arranged an all-day layover in Toronto, my first ever visit to Canada. After catching the UP Express train from the airport to downtown (return ticket just under $12 Canadian if you make the round trip within 7 hours), I stopped for lunch at Richmond Station, on a friend’s recommendation. City Hall was next, with its sign welcoming visitors to the city.
Old City Hall is across the street, designer in a Romanesque style and built of dark sandstone.
The CN Tower, for several decades the tallest freestanding structure in the world (surpassed in 2007 by the Burj Khalifa), dominates the skyline. Here it points skyward behind Union Ststion, the city’s main rail terminus and an attractive building constructed in 1919.
After a visit to Roundhouse Park, converted from a railway yard into an outdoor museum, complete with miniature railway, and a walk along Lake Ontario, it was time to head back to the airport for my next flight. On to Mumbai, via Zurich.
